Swiss Steak

My Mother used to cook Swiss Steak all the time when I was a kid and my favorite thing to have with it was mashed potatoes. Some people like it with rice, which is fine, but for me, it's got to be potatoes.


1 round steak (about 1 & 1/2 lbs)
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp each salt & pepper
all purpose flour-for coating
1/3 cup oil
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 medium oinion-cut into big strips
1 bell pepper-cut into big strips


1. Cut steak into serving size pieces and season with garlic powder, salt, & pepper.
2. Dust meat with flour.
3. In large skillet, brown both sides of meat in oil.
4. Transfer to dutch oven.
5. Combine crushed garlic, tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, and 1 can measure of water.
6. Pour over steak and simmer until tender.
